If you’re in the market for a new toaster, you’ll notice right away there’s a wide variety of options to choose from. With 2- and 4- slice toasters, plastic and metal picks, as well as long slot, it’s understandable if selecting the right model can feel overwhelming. The good news is most aren’t designed to just toast a plain slice of bread anymore (remember when sweet potato toast was a thing?).
On our quest to make the perfect toast and find the best toaster on the market, the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Technology Lab left no crumb behind: We tested over 58 toasters to determine how quickly and evenly they brown white bread. We lined up toasts side by side from light to dark to evaluate the range. After we toasted consecutive batches we compared them for consistency. We reviewed the owner’s manual, and evaluated the ease of using the controls, surface temperatures, and cleanability — we love a removable crumb tray. We checked whether or not the slots can accommodate thick bagels, long slices of bread, and small English muffins, and if they go high enough for easy grabbing.
Die-Cast 2-Slice Smart Toaster
The Breville Die-Cast 2 Slice Toaster was the top model in our test. It’s worth every cent if you’re looking for a champion toaster that will turn out evenly golden brown slices of bread batch after batch. With the push of a button, the grates lower your toast automatically — no lever-pressing. It also features extra wide slots for bagels.
Use the Lift and Look setting to check on its progress; if it isn’t browned to perfection, use the A Bit More feature to add extra time. A pull-out crumb tray on the base makes it easy to clean, although it is not dishwasher safe. Also worth noting that the sleek die-cast metal housing makes it major eye candy for your countertop.
The brushed stainless steel Black + Decker 2-Slice proves you don’t need to spend a bundle to get a good toaster. If you have a slice of bread for breakfast on the reg, you’ll love that this model can toast bagels, big homemade slices of bread, and English muffins alike. Because of its low price and small countertop footprint, it’s great for dorm rooms, kitchens with minimal counter space, or anyone on a budget.
Savoy 4-Slice Toaster
The black and stainless steel model can be depended on for toasting everything from a barely brown white slice of toast to dark rye toast. It’s great for entertaining, too — not only can it toast up to four slices at once, but if there’s a crowd at the table, it will pop up slice after slice to the same degree of doneness without burning by the second or third batch.
